For my project Us/Them in the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure and honor to follow Meyrem Almaci from the Flemish ecological party Groen.
Besides photographing her daily activities in the parliament, commissions, etc, the past few months have been all in light of the local elections in Antwerpen. It’s been fun to be able to see an election campaign from a backstage point of view.

I’ve been able to enter parliament, various tv studios, mosques, etc…
I’ve followed around 6 debates between the top candidates running in Antwerpen in different settings and with varied audiences. It’s been quiet an experience…
Today is the final campaign day. Tomorrow, Sunday will be ‘the’ day everybody worked so hard for to reach… The actual voting and anxious wait for the results. I’m very curious what this day will bring.

After the elections I’ll continue following Meyrem around for a little while more. I have to say it’s already been an incredible pleasure. She is a wonderful woman and an authentic politician. She believes in what she says and really wants to make our world a better place. Driven and never giving up. She really fights to try to make a chance and get her point across.
You can see the work I did with her already via this link. I hope you like the work and that it gives you a different insight into the local elections process.
