Happy 2017

‘A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song’
Maya Angelou

The past year yet again has been filled with wonderful people, some personal challenges, beautiful travel and inspiring moments.

Working and writing on my first book ‘In praise of shadows’ has been/ and is amazing in every way imaginable.
I hope to share the final result and many more other stories, with an equal amount of passion as always, in 2017.

For now, wishing you a happy and love filled new year.

Diversity is a reality

Three years ago, while working on Us/Them, my project on Muslim women and the veil in Belgium, I took this picture below of the election campaign of extreme-right political party Vlaams Belang.
(It still creeps me out that this type of advertisement polarizing and stigmatizing is possible at all.)

Dare to choose', presenting Islam as the biggest threat to Flemish society. Aartselaar, Belgium, 2012

Today, I’m reminded once more of how relevant my project US/Them is…

I’m reading an article in the newspaper about how aggression against Muslims is on the rise after the sparked fear following the killings in the offices of Charlie Hebdou in Paris, the incident in Verviers and the Belgian army guarding ‘strategic places’ in the streets of my city Antwerp.

Muslim people are being harassed for being Muslim. They get remarks or are called terrorists because they wear a headscarf or jellaba…

In this climate of fear and hate, an anti-Muslim movement Pegida Vlaanderen has arisen and is trying it’s best to create even more fear and distance between people.

Yet they seem to forget that diversity is already and always will be a reality and something everyone needs to accept. Instead of polarizing somebody because they wear different clothes or have different religious believes, we should put more effort into ways of learning from each other and making sure everyone has chances to participate and feel included in our society.

It shouldn’t be ‘Us versus Them, but ‘together’. WE all are ONE

Sweat baby Sweat

I’ve had the pleasure of once more to work with the incredibly talented choreographer Jan Martens. From the very first moment I saw a piece created by him, I was blown away and could see that he is a raw talent and at such a young age already has developed a dance language of his own. From that moment on I try to see everything he makes and I’ve been fortunate enough that Jan allows me to photograph and film during rehearsals, to document his wonderful journey in creating pieces.

In the past few days, during the wonderful Theaterfestival, I’ve worked with him and the 8 amazing dancers from the ‘The Dog Days are over’ production and the sweaty result will be online soon.

Building a mobile studio in one of the dressing rooms was not possible without the help and material of friend and fellow photographer Walter Saenen, who in this way helped me create the images I had in my head when I saw this show in sneak preview quite a while ago. Working in a studio setting was very new as well and it’s been wonderful to test this out, create images and learn.
