#2 The Guardian’s best of photography 2017

Schermafbeelding 2017-12-14 om 08.16.44

I started ‘Bending The Frame‘ to create projects that envision my ideas about photography. Instead of complaining what was wrong or could be better with things, I wanted to create things and see if we could literally bend some frames. The idea for #Slide was to rethink the framework of a slideshow and match up photographers with an amazing body of work to incredible musicians that have the art to improvise and who can have a dialogue with the photographer. The result was then performed live during 3 consecutive evening screenings in Antwerp.
The collaboration between Sohrab Hura, Hannes d’Hoine and Sjoerd Bruil has been more then incredible in every way and travelled around to Berlin, Minnesota, Gent,…
Each different live performance or screening had it’s own feel and magic but London stands out. 3 live performances by Hannes that captivated the audiences, a continuous loop of the piece during the wonderful Peckham 24 photo festival, a party with our own resident dj Faster PussyKat aka Katrijn Sermeus.
Now Sean O’Hagan of The Guardian makes ‘The Lost Head & The Bird’ screening his #2 of the past photography year.
So so proud!! Wow wow wow. Thank you Iona Fergusson and Vivienne Gamble for bringing this amazing piece of Sohrab’s and Hannes to London. It’s been special in every single way imaginable.

#Slide – 80 days of summer – Gent

I’m so proud that Bending The Frame will be presenting a slide compilation evening at the 80 Days of Summer photo festival in Gent.

With a full program of slides by Sohrab Hura, Pieter ten Hoopen, Sébastien van Malleghem and Anton Coene we will close off the festival with a bang.

Some of Belgians finest musicians like Rudy Trouvé, Aldo Stuyf, Elko Blijweert, Hannes d’Hoine, Sjoerd Bruil, and more will be playing live and/or have created a unique soundscape with the pieces created by the photographers.
Photography will literally become performance and will blow your minds away.

Sohrab Hura’s slide was the  highlight at the Peckham 24 festival during the London Photo Fair for the folks of the British Journal of Photography, Sean O’Hagan of the Guardian as well as the director of the Photographers Gallery. No more reference needed right? 🙂

Don’t miss this incredible, exciting and enthralling night where photography meets music. Welcome!

We together

img_9586

I’ve just returned from a wonderful visit to Graz, Austria, where I attended the opening of the group exhibition ‘We Together’, curated by Maryam Mohammadi.

“We together” brings together female artists with backgrounds in the Middle East, as well as in Europe and the USA. They have in common that they are critical in their photography and video work with female identities and everyday environments, personal situations, dependencies, gender roles and the political changes in a regional as well as global context. 14 different views on women by women.

My work from ‘Hamida’s camp pregnancy‘ was included among the work by fantastic artists like Boushra Almutawakel, Raeda Saadeh, Sonja Hamid and Emine Gozde Sevim to name just a few.

Raeda Saadeh danced during an intense and haunting performance at the vernissage, visited by a big crowd. Meeting her, getting to know her work, spending some days with both her and Maryam has been heartwarming. Raeda’s vision as an artist, Maryam’s drive and passion to show the world a different view and get people together and connected is incredibly inspiring. Do take a moment to get to know their work.

Until the 18th of December on view in Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus, Graz
