Today is World Circus Day and for this I went back into my archive and wanted to show you some of the images I made of the incredible Palestinian Circus School founded by my friends Shadi and Jessika.
This school is so amazing and such a valuable project in a region, that is in desperate need for a bit of positivity. In the long lasting conflict and ongoing occupation, the children living there don’t have many opportunities to laugh.
The big smile of the girl in the picture above stays with me forever and shows exactly what the circus means to me.
In the summer of 2009 I had the pleasure of going on tour with the school and saw them bring joy to so many people. Instructors from Italy gave workshops to the young artists and helped them to create a show that entertained hundreds of families all over Palestine. For one evening or afternoon they left their troubles behind and kids were kids.
