Being a woman in Afghanistan

This coming 24th of April, my work will be exhibited during the ‘Being a woman in Afghanistan’ conference at the Vredeshuis in Gent.

I’m very much looking forward to hearing the Afghan guests speak about their country and what it’s like to be a woman there. As a Western woman it’s very different traveling in a country like Afghanistan. No matter what happens or what you see, you know that you can get out of the country whenever you want and you can go back home where things are safe and secure.

For a woman like Malalai Joya for instance that is something else… She is a very outspoken former parliamentarian who defied the system and spoke out against the warlords and war criminals within politics. In doing so, she got suspended and lost her job in parliament, had to go into hiding and still lives under constant threat.

I hope to see some of you there. It promises to be a very interesting evening and the first time some of my images from Afghanistan will be exhibited.
