Save the children finalist

© Wendy Marijnissen

I’m so happy and honored to be one of the finalists with the above image in this years Save the Children photo competition.

Mehmooda kissing her father after she received a cookie while they were living in a flood camp near Karachi after the flood destroyed their home and all their belongings. I was so lucky to have spent so much time with this wonderful family, who allowed me to visit them over and over again and to accept me  into their lives.

I especially love this particular image because it shows a moment of tenderness in the family. A moment of love and acceptance between a father and his daughter, which in a country like Pakistan still isn’t something evident. Boys are still preferred to girls and receive more opportunities in life.  In a male dominated society like Pakistan, the fact that a father openly show love for his daughter, means a lot and fills me with hope.

Girls like Mehmooda will only be able to fully achieve their potential, when the men in their lives, honor and truly respect them.

The photograph, along with all the other winners and finalists will be exhibited at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in Somerset House from the 27th of April until the 20th of May 2012. Do check it out if and when in London during this time.
